The collection consists of two items: letter from Burton to Leon H. Vincent, 30 Oct. 1915, part of an ongoing discussion of O. Henry, Brander Matthews, and Hamlin Garland, with Burton defending them against Vincent's allegations; mimeograph copy of poem fragment, with corrections, notated on verso as accepted, with the title The Modern Saint.

Richard E. Burton was an editor, author, and educator. He was born in Connecticut and educated at Trinity College and Johns Hopkins. He was literary editor of the Hartford Courant for several years before accepting a position at the University of Minnesota as English professor and department head.
